Make your very own Tom-a-tote, the latest pattern from Brooklyn Craft Company! Take your confident beginner crochet skills to the next level as you learn how to stitch tomato motif squares and get the 411 on bag construction.

 

In one three-hour session, you'll learn how to:

  • Crochet granny stitch
  • Create three different granny motifs
  • Crochet in the round
  • Connect squares to create the bag body
  • Create a bag strap
  • Please note, most students will finish 2-3 squares in class observe a demo of the bag construction. You will be well-prepared to complete the bag on your own after class.

 

Basic crochet skills are required to attend this workshop. You must be confident in the following:

  • Chain stitches
  • Either single crochet or double crochet

If you are a newbie or think you might need a refresher, join us for Crochet 101 first-- register here for our next session!

Location: We have two locations in Greenpoint, Brooklyn: The BCC Shop at 165 Greenpoint Ave, and The BCC Annex 37 Greenpoint Ave #105.  Your workshop location will be indicated when selecting your workshop date above. Your booking confirmation email and any subsequent reminder emails will also include the address, with a link to the location on Google Maps.
Cost: $45 includes three hours of instruction and Tom-a-tote pattern. Yarn and crochet hook can be purchased during class or in advance at our shop or on our site; a 10% discount will be honored for all students. See "Materials" tab for full list.

Ginny is a crocheter and knitter based in Brooklyn. She first learned to crochet in 7th grade, thanks to a friend who taught her during gym class. She has sought out opportunities to share the joy of fiber arts ever since. Over the years, Ginny has created nearly every type of project imaginable, but she especially loves to make well-fitting clothing. She also enjoys designing her own patterns and exploring the possibilities of circular machine knitting.

You will need:

  • 3 balls of Shiny Happy Cotton in True Blood Red, or any color you prefer for tomatoes!
  • 1-2 balls of Shiny Happy Cotton in Ivory White, or any color you prefer for the background (bags that use the larger Beefsteak Tomato square may only need 1 ball)
  • If you'd like to just learn the squares rather than work toward the full bag, you will need just 1 ball of Shiny Happy Cotton in your tomato color and 1 ball in your background color.
  • 1 ball of Shiny Happy Cotton in Moss Green, or Emerald green or scraps of any green yarn (a very small amount is needed to add tomato stems!)
  • 5mm crochet hook
  • Tapestry needle
  • Locking stitch markers

All materials needed for class are available to be purchased at our shop in person or online as a local pick up order at a 10% student discount. Please note, within 48 hrs of registering for the workshop, you will receive a discount code for the materials needed.
