Read about the backstory of Brooklyn Craft Company here.

Carolyn Heitmann, Owner

During a routine Garment District shopping trip in 2014, Carolyn had an epiphany: she wanted to build a business out of her lifelong crafty hobbies. As luck will have it, she discovered the newly formed Brooklyn Craft Company just a few months later. Here she was able to quickly put her career in operations management to good use, and has since taught hundreds in DIY dyeing, bookbinding, and lots more. In the meantime, Carolyn founded Bits and Bobs Craft Club, under which she hosted crafty events at Brooklyn bars, and later operated a year-long pop-up shop of cute and crafty things. In 2016 she teamed up with Brett Bara to open the next iteration of Brooklyn Craft Company: the retail store and online shop! Carolyn lives in Greenpoint with her dog Slider.

Brett Bara, Founder

Brett has a lifelong background as a crafter, having learned to sew and knit from her crafty mom while she was just a pre-schooler. She went on to build a career in DIY, as a craft magazine editor-in-chief, television and video host, book author, brand ambassador, designer, and blogger. Brett created the Brooklyn Craft Camp event series in 2012, which grew into Brooklyn Craft Company in its current incarnation. Brett has been featured on The Martha Stewart Show, The Wall Street Journal, The CBS Early Show, Design Sponge, Apartment Therapy, and more. She loves all crafts, but fiber-related projects are her favorite, from knitting and sewing to weaving and needlework. Brett lives in Greenpoint, Brooklyn with her husband, their twin toddler girls, and a very fluffy cat.
