Build your sewing skills and make a classic wardrobe staple: a zip-up hoodie!

This workshop will be a hybrid virtual/ in-person format. All of the sewing will take place at our shop-- no worries if you don't have a machine at home or if you can't make it to the live virtual session!  Here's how the schedule will look:

 

This will be a virtual info session taking place on Zoom. Your instructor will discuss pattern details and demonstrate how to cut your fabric. Your homework will be to complete all of the fabric cutting/ prep before we meet in person. The Zoom will be recorded, so you'll be able to access the video if you can't attend live or if you need to reference it while you're cutting fabric!

 

his part will take place at our Greenpoint shop! During this time we will work on the hoodie construction. All fabric must be cut and ready to sew upon arrival. 


In this hybrid virtual/ in-person workshop, we'll be working with the Halifax Hoodie from Hey June Handmade. You'll learn how to:

  • Follow best practices for using a commercial sewing pattern, including size selection, cutting from pattern pieces, and more
  • Sew heavier weight stretchy knit fabrics on a standard sewing machine (not a serger)
  • Install a separating zipper in a garment
  • Insert a drawstring
  • Please note: We will be making View C only in the workshop.  

 

This is a confident beginner garment sewing workshop; you must have basic machine-sewing skills and have sewn projects in the recent past. 

 

Class Details

Date & Time: 10/20 at 6:30pm Zoom session, plus one in-person intensive sewing session on 10/22 at 11:00am-6pm.  The date shown on the calendar above is the in-person session of this workshop; this is a 2-part hybrid virtual/ in-person workshop. 

Location: Virtual info session via Zoom + In-person at Brooklyn Craft Company, 165 Greenpoint Avenue (here's where we're located)

Cost: $165 includes 8 hours of instruction, and use of our BERNINA sewing machines. Does NOT include pattern, fabric or notions-- All required materials will be available for purchase at a 10% discount.

MEET YOUR INSTRUCTOR

Diana Rodgers is a fiber artist and educator who grew up on Long Island and is now based in Bronx, NY.  Since receiving a BFA from The Fashion Institute of Technology, Diana has pursued three creative career paths: fashion designer, manufacturer, and sewing educator. Sewing is the common thread among all three.


Most of her days are spent teaching people of all ages how to sew, but Diana finds time to work on soft sculptures, embroideries, and quilts.  Career highlights include teaching over 1000 people how to use a sewing machine, and selling her products to MoMA Design Store.

This is a confident beginner garment sewing workshop; you must have basic machine-sewing skills and have sewn projects in the recent past. Our Sewing 101 class (or equivalent) is a minimum prerequisite for this class. (You can register for one of our upcoming Sewing 101 workshops here.) If you're unsure whether you have enough sewing experience for this class, please send a brief email summarizing your sewing experience to info@brooklyncraftcompany.com.

Fabric and other supplies will be available for purchase in our retail shop & on our website at a 10% discount to students. The PDF pattern can be purchased here! 

   

Required Materials:

Fabric and other supplies needed for class are available to be purchased at our shop in person or online as a local pick up order at a 10% student discount. Please note, within 24 hrs of registering for the workshop, you will receive the discount code for the materials needed. For the Halifax Hoodie you will need:

  • Halifax Hoodie PDF Pattern - Purchase here!  
  • 2 yards Fleece, sweatshirt fleece (more stock arriving at our shop mid-September!), interlock, french terry, and other heavier weight knit fabrics at least 55” wide. 
  • Separating Zipper - See size chart in photos to determine length needed. 
  • 2 yards of 1-inch twill tape
  • 1 spool of all-purpose sewing thread
  • 1/2" twill tape or other cording for the drawstring
  • Fabric Scissors
  • All other tools needed for construction will be available for use at our shop the day of class.

*Please note it is always advisable to pre-wash any fabric being used for garment sewing as many fabrics can shrink, especially those containing cotton or linen. To prewash, simply wash and dry the fabric as you would the finished garment. If you buy fabric the day-of class and can't pre-wash (very common for classroom settings!), please keep in mind that finished garments must always be washed cold and line dried to prevent shrinkage.
