Join us to sew chic-yet-comfy Pietra Shorts! These gently flared shorts have a flat front, high-waisted silhouette with the comfort of an elastic waist in the back. Featuring lengthening panels in the front with slanted hip pockets and a hidden waist stay, you’ll never want to take them off.

In this advanced-beginner, two part workshop, you'll learn to sew from a printed pattern, AND you'll sew an amazing pair of Pietra Shorts, custom made to fit your body. You'll leave this class with the skills and confidence to tackle more garment sewing on your own.

You'll learn how to:

  • Measure the body accurately to create a perfect fit
  • Work from a commercial pattern, including size selection, deciphering instructions, cutting from paper pattern pieces, and more
  • Understand garment sewing basics such as proper fabric prep, pinning, cutting, ironing and troubleshooting
  • Become familiar with sewing jargon commonly found in commercial patterns
  • How to sew a flat-front waist with an elastic back, slanted hip pockets, and a hem.
  • How to finish seams with a zig zag stitch
  • Due to time constraints, all students will make the shorts version of this pattern. We will not be able to sew full pants in this workshop.

Please note this is not a learn-to-sew class. Students must have basic machine sewing knowledge and be comfortable using a sewing machine. Our Sewing 101 class (or equivalent) is a prerequisite for this class. (You can register for one of our upcoming Sewing 101 workshops here.) If you're unsure whether you have enough sewing experience for this class, please send a brief email summarizing your sewing experience to info@brooklyncraftcompany.com.

Fabric and other supplies will be available for purchase in our retail shop at a 10% discount to students. You will receive a materials list and discount code within 24 hours of registering!

      • Pietra Pattern by Closet Core Pattens. -- Purchase a pattern here!
      • 1.5 -2 yards fabric depending on size and fabric width. (See size chart above to determine yardage needed, the shorts are view C in the fabric requirements chart).  We reccomend using a structured woven such as twill, linen, chambray, or lightweight denim  (heavyweight wovens may create too much volume at the elastic waist depending on your personal preference!).
      • 1 yard of 1.5" wide elastic (Please note, this is slightly smaller than suggested in the pattern)
      • 1 spool of all-purpose sewing thread
      • Light weight fusible interfacing

All tools needed to complete this class will be provided and sewing machines will be available courtesy of BERNINA of America.

All class registrations are final; no refunds will be given.
