Whether you're a sewing newbie or a confident beginner wanting to tackle zipper projects, this class is for you! Our expert instructor will teach you sewing basics while you make a custom cushion. You’ll leave class with a finished zipper pillow, and once you know how to make one, you can make dozens more to deck out your sofa in DIY style!
Here’s what we’ll cover:
- Basic intro to a sewing machine, including how to sew a straight seam.
- How to cut fabric accurately
- Pinning and sewing seams
- How to install a zipper
No previous experience is necessary, but comfort on a sewing machine is helpful! If you think you need a bit of practice before tackling this project, check out our Sewing 101 workshops here!
Materials:
Fabric, pillow forms and zippers needed for class are available to be purchased at our shop in person or online as a local pick up order at a 10% student discount. Please note, within 24 hrs of registering for the workshop, you will receive the discount code for the materials needed. For Zipper Pillows you will need:

1/2 yard of fabric medium weight non-stretch fabric such as quilting cotton, cotton/linen blends, canvas etc.

1 zipper 12 inches or longer (nylon zippers can be cut to size) note the zipper does not show much on the finished pillow

16" Pillow form (optional) will be available to purchase day of class
All tools needed to complete this class will be provided and sewing machines will be available courtesy of BERNINA of America.

Meet Your Instructor
Diana Rodgers is a fiber artist and educator who grew up on Long Island and is now based in Bronx, NY. Since receiving a BFA from The Fashion Institute of Technology, Diana has pursued three creative career paths: fashion designer, manufacturer, and sewing educator. Sewing is the common thread among all three.
Most of her days are spent teaching people of all ages how to sew, but Diana finds time to work on soft sculptures, embroideries, and quilts. Career highlights include teaching over 1000 people how to use a sewing machine, and selling her products to MoMA Design Store.
