Sew a Denim Skirt
Amp up your sewing skills and make a timeless wardrobe staple-- a denim skirt!
In this Sunday intensive workshop, you'll practice basic garment construction and sewing from a purchased pattern. You'll also learn how to sew a zip fly front, belt loops, and inseam pockets. If you've sewn a garment or two and are ready tackle more skills, this workshop is for you!
You'll leave this class with the skills and confidence to tackle more garment sewing on your own AND with a super cute addition to your wardrobe.
This is an all-day workshop, including a midday lunch break. You'll learn how to:
- Measure the body accurately to create a perfect fit
- Work from a commercial pattern, including size selection, deciphering instructions, cutting from paper pattern pieces, and more
- Understand garment sewing basics such as proper fabric prep, pinning, cutting, ironing and trouble shooting
- Cut fabric and assemble a garment the right way
- Sew a hem, sew inseam pockets, sew belt loops, install a zipper, and more.
The skirt pattern will be provided and is yours to keep! We'll be working with the Ness Skirt from Tilly and the Buttons in this class. Make either a mini or knee-length skirt-- it's up to you!
Skill requirements: This is a confident beginner/ improver garment sewing workshop; you must have basic machine-sewing skills. Our Sewing 101 class (or equivalent) is a prerequisite for this class, and experience sewing at least one garment is helpful. Cost: $125 includes skirt pattern, 7 hours of instruction, and use of our BERNINA sewing machines. Does NOT include fabric, notions or hardware-- All required materials will be available for purchase during class at a 10% discount.

Meet Your Instructor
Diana Rodgers is a teaching artist living in Greenpoint, Brooklyn. Since earning a BFA in apparel design from FIT, she has enjoyed a varied creative career including fashion designer, entrepreneur, and teacher. The ‘common thread’ among all these endeavors is sewing. Diana currently teaches weekly sewing classes to children and adults, covering everything from clothing to accessories to quilts. When not teaching, she creates sewn illustrations (or applique), inspired by all the things that make her feel nostalgic. You can check 'em out on Instagram @wonderthreads
