Join us for a special hand sewing workshop as part of Healing Arts Week!
In this art therapy workshop, participants will engage in the benefits of textile arts and craft to create a personalized fabric pocket altar. Participants will experience mindfulness through hand stitching and fabric craft. Pocket alters are a symbolic way of creating grounding and intention wherever you go. Together we will use images, beads, charms and other craft materials to construct an altar you can keep on your person. We'll provide you with basic materials needed to create your own pocket altars to take home. Feel free to bring any personal items you wish to add to your altar and additional materials can be purchased on site.
Please note: Hand sewing is slow-going, so some students may not complete the project during class. However, you will leave with all the skills needed to finish up on your own!
No prior art experience necessary!

About Healing Arts New York
Healing Arts New York is part of the Jameel Arts & Health Lab’s global outreach campaign in collaboration with the World Health Organization. Incorporating a dedicated community of practice, online resources, and an annual city-wide activation during the United Nations General Assembly, the ongoing initiative is designed to embed the arts as a vital resource for public health and well-being across all five boroughs of New York.
Class Details
Date & Time: September 19 at 3:00pm-5:00pm
Class Length: 2 hours
Location: Brooklyn Craft Company's Summer in the City Pop-Up, 225 Broadway in Lower Manhattan
Cost: $45 includes instruction & materials. Feel free to bring any personal items you wish to add to your altar, and additional materials can be purchased on site at a 10% discount for students.

Meet your Instructors:
Molly G. Simmons Brusick LCAT, ATR-BC, a textile artist and licensed, board-certified art therapist, was born and raised in Washington, DC. She currently lives in Brooklyn, NY, with her dog, Pearl, after calling New York City home since 2008. Molly moved to NYC following her graduation from the Savannah College of Art and Design (SCAD) in 2008. In Spring 2022, she earned a Master's in Creative Arts Therapy (MPS) from Pratt Institute, graduating with honors and distinction and receiving the Excellence in Academic Achievement award. Prior to her graduate studies, Molly taught arts and crafts workshops throughout the NYC area, and spent over 8 years as a teaching artist and arts workshop instructor within local schools and communities.
Jessamyn Henschel MSW, LCAT, ATR-BC is an art therapist, social worker, and artist based in Queens. Her creative approach to therapy primarily focuses on trauma, identity/existential concerns, and neurodivergence. Currently, her work also includes an art therapy group for youth in transitional housing, community-based programming for neurodivergent adults, and board certification consultation for professionals. Lately, her artistic practice includes embroidery, ceramics, and watercolor. She believes that many pursuits are a "practice", and tries to embody this philosophy in all areas of her life and work.
