Learn to make a super awesome Anorak Parka in this 10-part sewing course!

The TN31 Parka by Merchant & Mills is a relaxed and versatile interpretation of the classic fishtail parka. It has side pockets, front welt pockets, a back vent and optional drawstring waist. We will be making the fully lined jacket with attached hood!

This workshop will (virtually!) meet for ten sessions. You'll learn how to:

  • Print and assemble a PDF pattern at home (or opt for purchasing the pre-printed pattern, OR have the PDF wide-format printed. See materials list for more info)
  • Measure the body accurately to create a perfect fit
  • Work from a commercial pattern, including size selection, deciphering instructions, cutting from paper pattern pieces, and more
  • Construct a jacket from start to finish
  • Fully line a jacket
  • Sew side pockets and front welt pockets
  • Create a drawstring waist
  • Sew a button-down front
  • Please note: We will covering how to sew the fully lined, hooded version only.

Skill Requirements

Please note this is an advanced-level workshop. This workshop is suitable for advanced/intermediate students who are very comfortable using their sewing machine and have completed several intermediate garment projects in the recent past.

Materials + Tools Required

**Save 10% on supplies purchased at Brooklyn Craft Co with code PARKA10**

  • TN31 Parka Pattern--  If you opt to purchase the PDF pattern but prefer not to print/ assemble your pattern at home, we highly recommend our friends Brooklyn Motif for wide format pattern printing! They have generously extended an offer of 15% off pattern printing for Brooklyn Craft Co workshops with code CLASS.
  • 3-4.5 yards outer fabric (depending on size and fabric width) like cotton canvas, or other heavy fabrics that can be ironed. Please note: If you have not worked with waxed canvas or oilcloth extensively, we do not recommend doing so for this project! Unfortunately it cannot be ironed, which will pose a challenge for many parts of this garment, including the welt pockets. Of course, we want you to make your dream jacket! So if you do choose to use waxed canvas or oilcloth, please be prepared for the additional challenge you are taking on. :)
  • 3-4.5 yards lining fabric (depending on size and fabric width)-- medium weight woven fabrics like quilting cotton, linen, lining-specific fabric, etc. This choice is much more flexible than the outer fabric!=
  • Be sure to purchase enough outer and lining fabric for both the main jacket and the hood patterns!
  • 1 yard fusible interfacing
  • 7 buttons, approximately 17-22mm
  • 5 yards drawstring cord
  • Sewing machine -- please make sure your machine is in good working order before registering for this workshop.
  • Iron and ironing board or mat
