Learn to sew a zipper pouch! If you want to tackle zipper sewing + learn handbag construction basics, this virtual workshop is for you.

Our expert instructor will guide you through sewing one lined zipper pouch with a gusseted bottom, perfect for makeup or an on-the-go project bag. You'll also receive info to sew a second, smaller pouch on your own, ideal for change, credit cards you name it!

Here’s what we’ll cover:

  • How to cut fabric accurately
  • Pinning and sewing seams
  • How to create a lining
  • How to sew a squared, flat bag bottom
  • How to install a zipper

Skill requirements: This is a beginner level sewing workshop, but it is not a learn to sew workshop. You do not need to have any experience sewing bags, but you must have basic machine-sewing skills.  If you're unsure whether you have enough sewing experience for this class, please email us at hello@brooklyncraftcompany.com and we will help you decide if this class is for you.

Materials + Tools Required

  • Medium-weight woven, non-stretchy fabric. 1 yard total is enough to make both pouches (we used two different half-yard cuts of fabric for the pouches shown). Quilting cotton works great, or you could opt for a heavier fabric like canvas for the exterior fabric
  • Interfacing (Sof-shape will result in a softer pouch, while Heat n' Bond Craft Interfacing will create a firm, more structured pouch)
  • 9" zipper
  • 1 spool of all-purpose sewing thread
  • Straight pins
  • Fabric scissors
  • Iron
  • Sewing machine -- Please make sure your machine is in good working order before registering for this workshop :)
  • Zipper foot for your sewing machine
  • Printer access -- the pattern will be emailed to you ahead of class
  • Optional: 6" zipper for smaller pouch (will not be sewn during the workshop)
