Kids After School Fiber Art Classes
Calling all crafty kiddos! Come get creative with us and learn a variety of fiber arts in this ten-week course in our Greenpoint, Brooklyn studio.
We'll explore a range of fiber, textile and needlework crafts, including:
- pom-poms & tassels
In this ten-week after-school course, children aged 7-12 will learn a sampling of fiber and textile hand crafts. They'll gain confidence and build fine motor skills that will last a lifetime! Students will leave this course with the skills to tackle more textile projects as they develop valuable exposure to creativity, design, and more.
This is a ten-week course on Thursdays from 3:15-4:30pm, September 27 through December 13, 2018. (There will be no class on November 1 and November 22.) After-school pick-up is available from PS110, PS34, and PS31 (scroll down for more info).
Your child will learn:
- The basics of hand embroidery, including how to transfer a pattern to fabric, how to do several hand embroidery stitches, and how to display a finished piece in an embroidery hoop.
- How to make wild and colorful pom-poms and tassels from yarn.
- How to make a DIY loom, and the basics of tapestry weaving.
- How to do several types of macrame knots and combine them in limitless designs.
- The amazing feeling when they get to say, "I made it myself!"
Students will complete a total of four fiber-related projects during this course, including:
- Embroidery hoop design
- Woven wall hanging
- Pom-pom and tassel garland
- Macrame wall hanging
Materials are not included in class cost and students will be required to purchase fabric and other notions for each class project. Parents should expect to purchase approximately $60 in supplies throughout the duration of the course.
This class is open to complete beginners age 7-12. No previous experience is required.
Date & Time: Ten (10) Thursdays 3:15pm - 4:30pm, September 27 through December 13, 2018. (There will be no class on November 1 and November 22.)
Location: Brooklyn Craft Company, 165 Greenpoint Avenue (here’s where we’re located)
Cost: $495 includes 10 weeks of class, instruction, and use of necessary tools during class. Does NOT include raw materials to make finished projects; all required materials will be available for purchase during class for an approximate total cost of $60.
School Pick-Up: We are offering school pick-up from PS110, PS34, and PS31 for an additional $125; the cost of pick is added to the course cost of $495 automatically when you select your school and click "add to cart" at the top right of this page.
No refunds will be given on kids' class registrations. In the event you choose to un-enroll your child from the program and we are notified more than 30 days before the first class date, we will issue a credit that can be used toward a future course. Within 30 days of the first class date, we cannot offer refunds, credits or requests to reschedule.
Please note, no make-up classes will be offered. If your child misses a week for any reason, the instructor will do her best to catch your child up in the next week's class.
Meet Your Instructor
Diana Rodgers is a teaching artist living in Greenpoint, Brooklyn. Since earning a BFA in apparel design from FIT, she has enjoyed a varied creative career including fashion designer, entrepreneur, and teacher. The ‘common thread’ among all these endeavors is sewing. Diana currently teaches weekly sewing classes to children and adults, covering everything from clothing to accessories to quilts. When not teaching, she creates sewn illustrations (or applique), inspired by all the things that make her feel nostalgic. You can check 'em out on Instagram @wonderthreads
